The annual Buchan Heritage Festival, staged by the Buchan Heritage Society in the Aberdeenshire village of Strichen, took place over the last weekend in May.

Now in its 32nd year, the Strichen Festival remains an ever popular showcase of the indigenous culture of North East Scotland.  Over that time, its contribution to preserving the literature, poetry, music and song of the North East has been immense.  It is now well supported by local schools who, prompted by the Buchan Heritage Society, play a growing role in encouraging their young folk to participate actively in their cultural heritage.

As usual, this annual extravaganza of all things Doric was topped and tailed by ceilidh events on the Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.  The main event on Saturday saw competitions in fiddle, piano and accordian, in ladies, gents and junior singing, story telling, Doric writing and Doric verse, and much, much more.  Competitors entertain the wider audience at Saturday's lunchtime concert and winners perform at the much bigger prizewinners concert on the Saturday evening, a hugely popular event guaranteed to pack out the village's Ritchie Hall.

The standard was as high as ever, introducing both new work and new performers to the genre.  Especially popular were Rachel Carstairs of Keith, winner of the ladies' singing, and an outstanding newcomer in 15 year old Ellie Beaton of Rothienorman, winner of the junior singing competition and surely a musical star in the making.

We congratulate all the competitors - not only the winners - and look forward to the next event on the weekend of 25th-27th May 2018.
