Society lunch at Barony Castle 1MbA very full day of activites for members and their guests on Saturday 24th September began with a meeting of the Society's council at 11.00 am.

Members gathered for a drinks reception at 12.30 pm, during which our member David Waterton-Anderson of Kinedar entertained us on his pipes.  We were privileged to be joined at lunch by Mr Dariusz Adler, the Edinburgh based Consul General of the Republic of Poland, as our guest speaker.  Mr Adler addressed us after lunch with an entertaining and informative talk on the extensive links between Poland and Scotland, dating back to the 18th century, through the Second World War which saw many Polish servicemen settle in Scotland, connections which have strengthened up 'til the present day.

The Society's Annual General Meeting followed the Consul General's remarks, after which Mr Keith Burns, Project Manager, gave a fascinating illustrated talk on the Great Polish Map of Scotland, which is situated in the castle grounds.  Currently undergoing restoration after several decades of neglect, this is the biggest relief map in the world, at more than 50 metres in diameter.  The map was constructed by Polish engineers in the 1970s to recall the role of the castle as a training centre for Polish airmen during the Second World War.

We are grateful to Charles and May McKerrell of Hillhouse for arranging a most enjoyable day.
