Royal Celtic SocietyThe Royal Celtic Society

For nearly 200 years, the Royal Celtic Society has been at the cutting edge of activity to support the language, literature, music and culture of the Highlands and Western Islands of Scotland. The Society holds regular events for members, awards medals for excellence in music and literature and sponsors a wide range of organisations dedicated to the traditions, language and arts of the Highlands and Islands.

The council meeting in October 2015 determined upon a review of our annual charitable beneficiaries, which has now been completed.

Glenfinnan Games

There are now 10 organisations receiving support annually from the Society: Clan Macpherson Museum, Glenfinnan Games, North Uist Games, Parkside Primary School, Fas Mor (a new addition - a playgroup in Skye), the Argyllshire Gathering, the Northern Meeting, Innerleithen Pipe Band, Corbery Park Pipers and the Kintyre Piping Society.

The reduction in annual beneficiaries frees up finds to devote to new opportunities as they arise and several projects remain under consideration.  These include, inter alia, Royal Celtic Society gold medals for cadet pipers and drummers, a Gaelic map of Scotland and Edinburgh University's conference on the Ulster Cycle and Finn Cycle, planned for 2018.

The Council agreed, with some enthusiasm, that the small grants we are able to offer should be particularly available to individuals - especially, for example, artists or students - for individual costs relating to their work.  Appications for this kind of support would be especially welcome as it is here that we can, arguably, make the most difference.
