Tom DevineThe Society's annual Summer Lunch will take place at the New Club in Edinburgh on Sunday 10th June, when the guest speaker will be Sir Thomas Devine, Kt, OBE, HonMRIA, FRSE, FBA, Sir William Fraser Professor Emeritus of Scottish History and Palaeography at the University of Edinburgh.

Tom Devine is unquestionably the leading Scottish historian of our generation, with a distinguished academic career and as the author of more than 40 books, each a leader in its field.  We are delighted to host him on this occasion.  The theme of his talk will be: Were the Clearances confined to the Highlands during the 18th and 19th centuries?  This will be a precursor to his forthcoming book, "The Scottish Clearances, 1500 to 1900: A History of the Dispossessed", which will be published in October.

Demand for places at this lunch has been predictably high; there are still a few tickets available but members who would like to come at this late stage should contact the Treasurer as soon as possible.
