European Year of Cultural Heritage

Commissioner HoganThe Society's Chairman and Vice Chairman were invited to attend the launch of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH) in hte French Consulate (formerly the Lothian Chambers) on George IV Bridge recently.

Representatives attended from across the Scottish heritage and cultural spectrum to hear speeches from, inter alia, Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop and Phil Hogan, the European Union Commissioner from Ireland, who is taking the lead on this initiative.

Summer Lunch with Sir Tom Devine

RCS devine lunch 1The Royal Celtic Society's annual Summer Lunch took place on Sunday 10th June at the New Club in Edinburgh.

The guest speaker was Professor Emeritus Sir Thomas Devine, OBE, HonMRIA, FRSE, FBA, Scotland's leading contemporary historian, who enthralled his audience with a talk on the theme, 'Were the Clearances confined to the Highlands during the 18th and 19th centuries?'
